Sol B. Heckelman was born August 2, 1931, in Brooklyn, NY, to Jacob and Anna Heckelman. He was the second of three sons. Joseph, Sol and David were raised in a two-family home, along with their cousins, Aunt and Uncle.
Sol attended Flatbush Yeshiva and transitioned to the local public high school in 9th grade. Shortly after earning a BA in Psychology from Columbia University, Sol was drafted into the Army, just post the Korean War, where he served as a Clinical Psychology Specialist and Instructor at the US Armed Forces Institute. Sol was discharged from active duty in 1956 with a Metal of Honor for Good Conduct and from the Reserves three years later.
Sol married Sandra Baker in 1961, earned an MS in School Psychology from Yeshiva University six months later and moved to NJ shortly thereafter. Sol earned his PhD from Rutgers in 1970 and moved the family to East Brunswick in 1972. Twenty-seven years later, Sol retired from Long Branch School System as their Director of Pupil Personnel Services.
Sol’s service to the community includes, Anshe Emeth Memorial Temple, United Way, Jewish Federation and Jewish Family Services, and Professional organizations such as NJ Association of School Psychologists. He was honored with Presidencies of the latter two.
His legacy however, will be highlighted by his loving relationship with his four great-grandchildren, Serenity, Tanner, Tillie and Tessa.
