Lev Fonarev

June 10, 1930 — May 28, 2025

Highland Park

Lev Fonarev lived a long, fascinating and meaningful life. Born in a time of great upheaval, he experienced the evacuation of World War II, the Stalin era and much more. He lost his brother and best friend, Yuri, early in life and would often tell stories about their childhood together.

At 63, he immigrated to the US to start a new life, one that would be more difficult for him, but better for the generations to come. Instead of retiring, he embraced the challenges and opportunities of his new life. He began to work again and continued working for another eight years, a testament to his remarkable perseverance and strength. Lev took pride in having a routine, making new connections, learning English and even a little bit of Spanish.

Lev met his life partner, Gloria, in first grade. Though life took them in different directions for a time, they reunited some 20 years later and went on to share 67 wonderful years together. Their life was filled with travel and learning — they loved exploring every part of the USA, but also traveled all over the world. They always traveled with a guide, always eager to understand the world more deeply.

Lev had a unique gift for building strong relationships and made friends wherever he went. He and Gloria loved to entertain, filling their home with laughter, warmth, and community. He was truly the life of the party and especially loved a good game of pool. Mischievous as a child and spirited throughout his life, his energy was infectious.

Above all, he cherished his family. His daughter Olga, granddaughter Tatyana, great grandchildren Ian and Nathan brought him immense joy. His home was filled with their photos and drawings, proudly collected and lovingly displayed.

His legacy is one of enduring love, courage, loyalty and the joy he brought into the lives of those who knew him.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
