Reina Schwartz, a resident of Piscataway, NJ, for more than 60 years, passed away on her birthday, July 28, 2022. She was 91.
Born Reina Rachel Chaimowitz, she was raised in Brooklyn, NY, and attended New Utrecht High School and Brooklyn College before marrying Stanley Schwartz in 1952. Together they raised a family and maintained a household for more than 36 years until his death in 1989.
Her career as a special education teacher began after college in Brooklyn and continued with brief interruption as Reina raised her family, until her retirement from the Plainfield, NJ, school system, when she became a volunteer domestic violence counselor, working in coordination with the Piscataway police department.
Reina was also active during the 1960s and 1970s with the Piscataway League of Women Voters, leading the organization for a short period of time and appearing prominently as moderator for town hall candidates’ night debates.
Reina is survived by her sons Jan Schwartz of Ridgewood, NJ; Eric Schwartz of Somerset, NJ; Kyle Schwartz of Hillsborough, NJ; their wives, respectively, Ellen Feld, Susan Schwartz, and Jen Tamang; and seven grandchildren: Maxwell, Dashiell, Rockwell, Daniel, Simon, Liam, and Olivia.
Funeral services are being held privately.
The family asks, in lieu of flowers, that contributions be made in Reina's memory to the Humane Society of New Jersey ( https://www.newjerseyhumanesociety.org/ ) to continue to promote the lifesaving programs for animals that meant so much to her.
