Sorie Lee Knox

August 3, 1938 — August 9, 2023

Monroe Township

Sorie Knox, beloved father and grandfather, passed away at age 85 on August 9th, in Somerset, NJ. Sorie grew up in Long Beach, Long Island, raised by his father and mother, Herman and Sophie Knox. It was on the canals of Long Beach that Sorie developed his love of boats and sailing. Sorie graduated from Long Beach High School and attended the State University of New York Maritime College at Fort Schuyler. After graduation, Sorie went on to be recognized by Forbes Magazine for being the youngest supertanker captain at the time. Sorie traveled the world working on a supertanker for several oil companies for 8 years until he was married.

Sorie was introduced to Marsha Levine through a blind date. After 6 short months of dating, they were engaged . Once married, Sorie came ashore to work in maritime consulting and move to New Jersey. Sorie and Marsha raised their children, Meridith and Stephanie, in East Brunswick, NJ, where they lived for about 25 years. Sorie transitioned to a career in financial planning and worked for New York Life. Sorie contributed to his community by being a literacy volunteer, and he was also an avid tennis player.

Sorie is survived by his two daughters, Meridith Niessen and Stephanie Suriani, both of Scotch Plains; sons in law Seth Niessen and Rich Suriani; and four grandchildren: Jake and Max Niessen, Gabriella and Matthew Suriani.

The family wishes memorial contributions to be made to either SUNY Maritime College (https://www.sunymaritime.edu/donate-now) or to the Parker Health Group, 1421 River Road, Piscataway, NJ, 08854, a nonprofit organization serving seniors.
