Dr. Stanley E. Katz

East Brunswick Township – Stanley E. Katz passed away peacefully on June 2, 2025. He was 94.

Stanley was born in New York City and raised in Passaic, NJ.

He was Professor Emeritus of the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology at Rutgers University after having served on the Rutgers faculty for 47 years. He graduated from Passaic High School and then attended Upsala College in East Orange, NJ. After graduating from Upsala in 1953 with a BS in Chemistry, he attended the University of Delaware graduating in 1955 with a MS in Chemistry. He attended Rutgers University and earned his Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences in 1959. Upon graduation, he joined the faculty at Rutgers.

The mother of one of his childhood best friends set him up on a blind date with Elaine Greenbaum of Paterson, NJ. Stanley and Elaine married in 1955 and later moved to Franklin Township, NJ before finally settling in East Brunswick, NJ in 1963 with their three sons, Jack, Joseph, and Howard.

Stanley and Elaine were active in advocating for and helping to start special education programs in both the East Brunswick public school system and the Anshe Emeth Temple in New Brunswick, NJ, as their son Howard had special needs.

Stanley was chairman of the Biochemistry and Microbiology Department at Rutgers University for 11 years but his first love was always teaching and students. He was devoted to and loved his graduate students like they were his family; many of them became lifelong friends and colleagues. He took tremendous pride in the success and achievements of his graduate students.

He is loved and survived by his sons and their families: Dr. Jack Katz (Ph.D.), his wife Elyse and daughter Melissa (South Brunswick, NJ), and Dr. Joseph Katz (Ph.D.), his wife Catherine and children Josh and Sarah (Cary, NC). He was predeceased by Elaine Katz, his wife of 68 years in December 2023 and his son Howard Katz in July 2020. The funeral will be held at 11:30 am on Friday, June 6, 2025 at Riverside Cemetery, Saddle Brook, NJ under the direction of the Crabiel Parkwest Funeral Chapel, 239 Livingston Avenue, New Brunswick, NJ. The family will receive guests after the service at the family home.

The family would like to thank the staff at Parker at River Road for the compassionate care given to Stanley. The family would also like to especially express our sincere gratitude to Lolitha J. (aka ‘Orlando’) for her advocacy, dedication, support, and loving care provided to Stanley.
