Tina Weishaus died peacefully surrounded by her family on May 28, 2025, at the age of 74. Tina found purpose in relentlessly working to make the world a better and more just place – as an activist, an organizer, an advocate, and a climate educator. She spent her entire life devoted to finding ways to advance the struggles for peace and for racial, economic, and climate justice.
Tina was born in Manhattan on April 21, 1951, to Ruth (Dubowy) and Samuel Weishaus She grew up in the Bronx and Queens, and attended college in New York, Wisconsin, and New Jersey. She worked as a nurse, and then as a psychotherapist for decades, specializing in treating those with eating disorders, but saw a wide variety of patients including those who had escaped from the war in the former Yugoslavia. Beyond her work, she always loved to meet new people and learn everything about their lives.
A resident of Highland Park for 37 years, Tina was an influential and respected member of her community, serving as President of the PTO and later as Chair of Sustainable Highland Park. Tina co-founded DivestNJ which advocates for state pension funds to divest from fossil fuels. She was a leader of the climate group 350NJ-Rockland. Tina was also an active member of the I.L. Peretz Secular Jewish Community and School for over 35 years.
Tina loved to knit, dance, laugh, and read. She loved coffee ice cream, board games, and spending time with Ira and their family at their lake house in Sussex County.
Tina is survived by her beloved companion of 50 years, husband Ira Mintz; treasured children, Daniel and Jenny; dear sister, Judi Zipkin; and adored grandchildren, Talvi and Elava. Her presence will be profoundly missed by the many whose lives she touched.
Tina has asked that any donations in her honor be made to DIRE - the Deportation & Immigration Response Equipo, Empower NJ, Ironbound Community Corporation, and the Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund.
